Is it just me, or do y’all also have friends / family members (mum I’m looking at you) who think supplements are unnatural / basically steroids? Well, I’m about to prove mum wrong - enter Gaspari Greens & Reds. May we never have to eat another fruit or vegetable.

I’m kidding, please don’t do that … eat your fruit and veg, be healthy, and use a Greens product to be healthy AF. There’s a reason why they’re called “supplements”!

The Reasons to Take This

Dude it’s fruit and veg, in powder form, what are you not getting?!

As the name suggests, this is intended to be a convenient way to supplement your diet with more greens and reds. Let’s be honest, you’re probably not getting your recommended 5 a day…

Fun fact - the “5 a day” recommendation is a result of guidance from the World Health Organization, which recommends that individuals consume "a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables per day”. A 2017 examination of data from a number of independent studies subsequently found that consuming double the minimum recommendation – 800g or 10 a day – provided an increased protection against all forms of mortality.

Less fun fact, this guidance explicitly excludes potatoes and other starchy veg, so fries and chips don’t count!

Bottom line, you’re not getting enough of the good stuff.

The Formula

Gaspari’s product is a high nutrient superfood intended to help promote healthy body function, and support immune and detoxification functions. All the ingredients are 100% natural, and extracted from organic dark red fruits and berries and dark green vegetables, free of pesticides and genetic modifications.

The greens blend is a source of phytonutrients from chlorophyll (which contributes to the dark green colour of vegetables) and antioxidants that help lower cholesterol and contribute to fortifying the immune system.

The organic antioxidant reds blend is a good source of antioxidants that fight harmful free radicals as well as improve digestion, relieve bloating and stomach discomfort, and improve nutrient absorption.

The product also contains probiotics, the “good bacteria” that help the digestive process, and fibre which err….helps keen one “regular”. There is also a host of spices / other compounds like turmeric and ginger, which help ease inflammation

Full blend below, but clearly this is packed full of nutrients that you need, and are probably not getting.

1) Organic Greens Blend (5g)

Organic Spirulina Powder, Organic Spinach Powder, Organic Parsley Powder, Organic Kale Powder, Organic Barley Grass Powder, Organic Wheat Grass Powder, Organic Chlorella Powder, Organic Green Pepper Powder, Organic Green Apple Powder, Organic Green Banana Powder, Organic Sweet Potato Powder & Organic Broccoli Powder

2) Organic Antioxidant Red Blend (2g)

Organic Strawberry, Organic Raspberry, Organic Blueberry, Organic Tart Cherry, Organic Pomegranate, Organic Cranberry

3) Organic Prebiotic Fiber (2g)

Inulin / Fructooligosaccharides

4) Immunity & Metabolic Blend (1g)

Organic Ginger Powder, Organic Turmeric Powder, Organic Green Tea Powder, Elderberry Extract & Apple Cider Vinegar

5) Probiotic Blend (3 Billion CFU/g)

Heat Stable Probiotic (Bacillus Coagulans)

The Mixability

With a greens product, the mixability is never going to be great because lots of the ingredients are not water soluble. As an example. non-soluble fibre obviously (as the name suggests…) does not dissolve in water, and that is why the indigestible (for humans) carbohydrate helps with bowel movements.

I typically mixed my Gaspari Greens & Reds in a shaker, and drinking relatively quickly. Done this way, the dark green powder becomes an unappetising, brownish liquid. If this is not consumed immediately, the powders separate, and the best way I can explain this is by showing you:

Reminds me of a healthy, much less fun B-52 shot …

As you can see from the image above, the drink separates into a green top layer, followed by a red layer, floating atop another greens layer. Obviously this has a huge impact on the texture and overall experience, so my advice would be to down this like beer, or give it a quick shake if you’ve set it down for a few minutes in between sips.

Overall, the mixability isn’t great, but it is pretty in-line with what I expected.

The Taste

On the subject of taste, Gaspari’s website states that “unlike most greens blends Proven Greens and Reds tastes great”. Unfortunately I have to say that I wholeheartedly disagree with this. It’s not that the product tastes bad, but it just doesn’t taste good.

I can’t really describe the taste of this, because it is quite bland and doesn’t taste like anything. I’d say the taste is earthy and “healthy”, in the sense that you know whatever you’re drinking is probably good for you. Unlike other brands, Gaspari have not tried to flavour their product, so again, it’s not that this tastes bad, it’s just that vegetable and fruit extracts don’t exactly taste like a smoothie…

The Flavour Longevity & Versatility

I’ll admit I was stumped on how to make this taste good. It doesn’t mix well into liquids, and honestly I don’t think I could have done much with this aside from mixing with water.

In a bid for inspiration, I had a quick browse of reviews left by other users on Gaspari’s website. One dude said that he mixes this with almond milk or his cream of rice, and it tastes “amazing”. I’m warning you now, don’t do this - It will be gross, and it will be your own fault… TRUST me. Just think about mixing a bunch of vegetable and fruit extracts into your porridge…

Basically what I’m saying is, get your supplement reviews from Inside the scoop, and not random comments from the seller’s website. (shameless plug😏)

The Pricing

The official price for this is $40 / roughly £30 for 30 servings. I have seen some UK retailers selling this for around £35. Honestly, this isn’t exactly cheap, but I do think this is decent value. It would definitely be more expensive to try and get all the different fruit / veg included in this via real foods, and this will honestly be one of the healthiest supplements you’ll have in your cupboard.

I got mine from Powerbody (wholesale), and they’ve been an amazing partner.

The Verdict

While I didn’t love the taste of this, I do think this is a great supplement absolutely packed with health benefits. All the ingredients are 100% natural, and extracted from organic dark red fruits and berries and dark green vegetables, free of pesticides and genetic modifications.

It’s hard to judge the effects of a greens supplement, but I do feel that it has helped with digestion (especially after a big / cheat meal), and overall health. Perhaps the benefits are partly psychological, but it’s nice to know that you’re getting a good amount of micronutrients, anti-oxidants, etc. in every scoop.

For all the health benefits outlined, I’d gladly power through a glass of slightly unappealing, earthy juice every day.
